Eric, former alpha male of the Slangkop troop, oldest Peninsula baboon, disappeared in November, 2011
In November 2011, Eric former alpha male of the Slangkop troop, Kommetjie and oldest Peninsula baboon, disappeared. People are concerned that two months after his disappearance Eric is dead. (On 3 January, the decomposing body of a male baboon was found in Kommetjie. The body was taken to BRU for identification which is awaited.)
Below is a poster feature (courtesy Baboon Matters) put together after Eric went walking with his son Anele several years ago, an act that in terms of current protocols could have landed them in a lot of trouble, including being on a watch list for culling if coming into the urban area and raiding. (Note Anele was killed when ridden over in 2009, George was killed by two dogs in 2011.)
